Explosion in Halifax in 1917, the most powerful in the pre-nuclear era; the biggest accident in motorsport history at the famous Le Mans race in 1955; the eruption of the Mont Pele volcano on the island of Martinique, which destroyed the city of Saint-Pierre with its 30,000 inhabitants; the earthquake on the Kwanto Plain in Japan in 1923, which went down in history as the most destructive. This is a far from complete list of catastrophes that are studied in the series.
