The series highlights the dramas, the heartbreak and the joys of animal breeding programmes from tigers to rhinos, rare antelope to penguins, meerkats to lemurs. Delivering all the joys and tragedies associated with animals and their young, the programme examines every aspect of the reproductive cycle from courting, mating, pregnancy, birth and finally parenting through the first delicate weeks of the life.

Zoo Babies also meets the vets, keepers and animal handlers for a more detailed understanding of the animals, their home environment and their babies.

At South Lakes Wild Animal Park, Ntombi the pregnant white rhino’s condition keeps the staff guessing. One keeper has to play Mum to an Indonesian piglet, while in the reindeer enclosure, the herd is expanding, literally.

Episode 2

At West Midland’s Safari Park, it’s a team effort monitoring Rachel the zebra when her labour lasts into the night and six feisty little white lion cubs get into some serious bother.

Episode 3

At Marwell Zoological Park, Mary the giraffe goes into labour, but will she deliver a healthy calf? And it’s time for a baby tortoise to come out of his shell.

Episode 4

At Bristol Zoo, keepers are worried about Komale, the baby gorilla and whisk him away from his Mum for a health check. Meanwhile Raz, a hand reared baby aye aye is off his food and needs to be taught how to move on to solids. And at Noah’s Ark Zoo Park, Millie the marmoset gives birth to triplets.

Episode 5

At the Highland Wildlife, the birth of a rare Przewalski’s horse gets the keepers is cause for celebration and everybody rushes to the rescue of a newborn reindeer as she fights for life.

Episode 6

From the waiting game to the mating game, Danaca the giraffe goes into the longest labour in Woburn Safari Park’s history, and Raja the elephant is encouraged to take more of an interest in the birds and the bees.

Episode 7

Today, the keepers at Blackbrook Zoo in Staffordshire, have a stressful time keeping their clutch of six kookaburra chicks alive against the odds, and a new born reindeer takes his first steps . Meanwhile, at Drayton Manor Zoo, Thomas the Lar Gibbon is teething and bites anything he can get hold of. Maybe a good old fashioned teething ring is the answer?

At Cotswold Wildlife Park in Oxfordshire, Friday the Bactrian camel is the last of the females to have her baby, but her behaviour is a worry. One keeper has his hands full when he becomes a surrogate mother to a cockatoo chick, and a tiny baby monkey struggles to pull through, after a shaky start to life.

Five Sisters zoo has a busy spring when Melissa the Racoon has her first litter of babies and doesn’t know how to rear them. It’s touch and go whether her maternal instincts will kick in time to save her babies. At Edinburgh Zoo the penguin eggs are hatching.

A pair of common marmosets at Knowsely Safari Park near Liverpool, are expecting twins. But when triplets arrive the keepers have to step in and take one of the babies away to be hand-reared. And there’s a dramatic first few hours for a newly born eland, when it’s surrounded by a threatening herd of bison
